Even though at one point they were just in movies, spy watches are a real thing today. They’re very common, and you can get them both on websites that specialize in “spy” gear, and on regular online stores such as Amazon.
They greatly vary in price, usually depending on the specifications and image quality, so you can get either a budget one or a more expensive one. It all depends on what you need and what you want to use it for.
Using your spy watch isn’t actually all that hard. You will need to keep a few things in mind, though, but generally speaking, you shouldn’t have any issues with it. If you got one, or are looking into buying one, you’ll want a few tips on how to use a spy watch, and what to be careful about. Know your spy watch
The first thing about using a spy watch is to know more about your specific spy watch. As we mentioned earlier, they vary greatly in terms of specifications and image quality, and you’ll need to keep this in mind. For example, using a cheap, budget spy watch in dark conditions isn’t really recommended. You also shouldn’t be submerging a spy watch you know isn’t waterproof.
To begin with, check the manufacturer’s waterproof (IP) rating. But don’t trust it just yet. There are two things to consider here. First, when you have a budget spy watch, it’s generally smart to keep it at around half of what’s recommended. For example, if the manufacturer says you’re safe for one hour under 1 meter of water, try to keep it below half an hour, or don’t submerge it deeper than half a meter.
Manufacturers often exaggerate these claims, and you don’t want to find out that this happened with your watch stopping to work. And second, especially if you paid a bit more for your spy watch, do you really want to risk it? Chances are your manufacturer won’t accept water damage under warranty, so keep this in mind. If you aren’t ready to accept damaging it, don’t submerge it.
Next, you’ll want to know the buttons. A spy watch often has a couple of buttons, and all of them are for a different function. The best way to do this is to check the manual, or user instructions.
However, you don’t just want to have a good idea, you want to be sure that the button you’re pressing does what you expect it to do. It’s a spy watch for a reason, you might not have time to think about it, and you want it to take that picture or record that video when you want it to, without hesitation.
You will also want to consider storage. There are some spy watches that have built-in memory, but others will require that you insert a micro SD card. This is an additional cost when purchasing, but gives you a bit of convenience when transferring data. You should know how much storage you have free as well, and try to keep the storage empty. This way, you know you have room when you need to take a photo or video.
Last, but not least, make sure you know where the camera is. With most of them, the camera will be at the bottom of the case, right above the bezel. Others, however, put it upfront, or on the sides. Knowing where the actual lens is will help you point the spy watch where you want it to be, and not take a random picture.
You can’t see what you’re taking a picture or video of, so you’ll want to know what you’re doing before you need to do it. And, you won’t want to obstruct the camera with your hand or something else, so knowing where your camera is is crucial.
Consider how you’ll be using it
An interesting thing about a spy watch is that you don’t really have to wear it if you want to record something. Oftentimes, people won’t pay much attention to a random watch just placed on a shelf or on a watch stand, and this might be a perfect opportunity for you.
This is why you’ll find a spy watch being used as a nanny cam or a hidden cam in one’s home. For this situation, you don’t need waterproofing or a lot of built-in storage, as it’s indoors and you can empty the storage every once in a while.
The other use, which is what most people buy a spy watch for, is taking pictures where you wouldn’t want to be seen taking pictures, or where it’s inconvenient to take out your smartphone. We aren’t talking about areas where it’s forbidden to take pictures.
However, nobody wants to be “that guy” in a museum, when everyone is listening to the guide, and they’ve got their smartphone out and taking pictures of just about anything and everything. In this situation, a waterproof watch might come in handy, as you’ll be wearing it out and about as a regular watch.
Make sure you maintain it
Last but not least, just like with any electronic device, you’ll want to maintain your spy watch. This means that you should keep the battery charged, the storage empty, and the lens clean.
The battery is crucial, as an empty battery leaves you with a useless watch. Well, so does a full memory card or built-in storage, when you think about it. And, a smudged lens will result in a blurry picture or video, sometimes even making it useless, so make sure you wipe it every once in a while.
All things considered, using a spy watch isn’t that difficult. If you do make sure you get the right one and use it properly, it should absolutely do its job!
